More and more IT suppliers (software and equipment developers) design ITxPT-compliant products, modules and services to ensure that they can be connected to, and function within, the ITxPT architecture.

ITxPT-compliant modules, even if provided by different suppliers, can be combined within one vehicle and operate together (multi-vendor environment).

Competitive through compliance

ITxPT compliance means that IT suppliers can become more competitive within the public transport industry by offering a wider and more usable choice of products and services. PTAs and PTOs can assess each module or service separately and combine them, regardless of supplier.

The proprietary approach is fading away in public transport, as it is in other industries too, and customers reject vendor lock-in.

Public transport digitalisation

With ITxPT architecture, software installation and updates can be run remotely and simultaneously for the entire fleet from a back-office.

There is no need to uninstall the software on each bus separately and then install the new version as was necessary in the past. Similarly, physical removal of pieces of hardware will become a lot less frequent.

The interoperability offered by ITxPT means a lowered entry threshold for new suppliers and start-ups that can now establish themselves as active participants on the market. This encourages innovation in the area of ITS, and the creation of more cost-effective solutions. In short, ITxPT compliance offers advantages to IT suppliers who take part in public tenders as some PTAs and PTOs set ITxPT as a purchasing requirement.

ITxPT brings competition to a different arena. With standardization of hardware, protocols and data formats etc, the focus of innovation turns to services. ITxPT’s role in the public transport industry can be compared to what e.g. Android, Bluetooth and USB have meant for the consumer electronics. Android made it possible to download applications regardless of its origin, compared to previous generation phones where services were limited to those pre-installed and an upgrade required a CD and a unique cable to your PC.

Many IT systems in public transport still work in this way. Bluetooth and USB standardized connectivity and enabled consumers to buy different brands just to their need and budget. Through these three, innovation in the areas of hardware and services was boosted immensely. Markets grew as well as entrepreneurs and companies, that understood the opportunity and embraced the change, have benefited greatly.
