ICT for RAILWAYS
Munich - November 15-16
The technical seminar, which was organized by the CENELEC TC9X committee, was held in Munich on November 15-16, 2023. The seminar aimed to offer insightful views on the policies, technologies, and standards that will guide the evolution of the railway system.
Now in its 7th edition, this workshop explains and illustrates how regulations, standardization and research contribute together to the evolution and competitiveness of the railway sector. It emphasizes the role of ICT in creating a safe, eco-friendly, and efficient railway.
Laurent LLERENA and Sylviane ROULLIER, from SNCF, ITxPT Principal member and leader of the ITxPT Heavy Rail Working Group, outlined the importance of interoperability.
They presented significant initiatives of SNCF within the heavy rail ecosystem to achieve interoperability of multimedia and telematics services. To define the term interoperability more precisely, they introduced the term compatibility, based on the need for PTAs/PTOs, which places greater emphasis on the need to integrate the ITxPT technical specification.
They underlined how ITxPT is a key element of interoperability and compatibility. They also highlighted all the actions undertaken by SNCF to achieve this, including their leading activity within Shift2Rail/Connecta3.
The workshop was attended by the main organisations in the rail sector, including the European Commission (DG MOVE), the European Railway Agency (ERA), research and innovation projects (Europe’s Rail, Shift2Rail), international standards bodies (IEC, CENELEC), representatives of public transport and railways (UITP, UIC), the Railway Industry Association (UNIFE) and many other stakeholders (industries and research centres).
