According to a new report released by the Swedish analyst firm Berg Insight, the European market for Intelligent Transport System (ITS) for public transport is growing fast: its market value was €1.03bn in 2014 and is expected to reach €1.46bn by 2019.

European research projects and initiatives in which UITP is involved, such as EBSF_2 (European Bus Systems of the Future 2), IT2 Rail (Information Technologies for the innovation programme Shif2Rail) or ITxPT (Information Technology for Public Transport), are considered to be a catalyst for this growth. These projects are actively working on the definition of open, interoperable systems in order to facilitate the deployment of IT solutions in public transport. These solutions, aiming to make public transport more efficient and user-friendly, include the collection of mobility data, real-time information, on-board equipment, electronic ticketing solutions, area traffic control systems…

UITP members like Trapeze Group, INIT, IVU, GMV, Atron, Pluservice or FARA rank amongst the leaders in the European market for public transport ITS.

A growing interest for ITS can also be observed in other parts of the world. This year, initiatives like the creation of a UITP IT working group in India or the organisation of a seminar dedicated to public transport innovations for smart cities in Brazil met with great success.

In March, the international conference and exhibition IT-TRANS 2016 (IT Solutions for Public Transport) will be the occasion to take stock of the latest developments in the ITS field worldwide and meet with its major players.
