With the S04P05-Passenger Counting v1.1.0, ITxPT is redefining how the industry thinks about passenger counting, moving beyond simple physical entry and exit counts towards a comprehensive framework for understanding vehicle occupancy and passenger activity across all modes of public transport.

The new Passenger Counting Specification, S04P05-Passenger Counting, marks a significant evolution of S02P07-Automatic Passenger Counting (S02). Designed to support also railway use cases, the new specification introduces a more modular and flexible approach to managing passenger occupancy information across a wide range of public transport use cases.

The new Passenger Counting specification has been designed to accommodate diverse requirements through a scalable and modular data model.

What the specification does

Passenger counting requirements vary significantly depending on the application (passenger categories segmentation, monitoring dedicated spaces etc.). It also covers the means of transport and the type of vehicle depending on the number of doors, as well as the various zones and specific access points within the travel areas.

Technical foundation

From technology point of view, passenger counting solutions vary a lot and often combine sensing technologies with statistical analysis and AI applications.

ITxPT builds on the established concepts of Transmodel (e.g., passenger space, passenger entrance, deck space, entrance sensor) while introduces the innovative concepts of Activity Counters and Aggregators, extending the framework and enabling a modular architecture.
